Declension of Negative Pronouns

Russian grammar --> Declension of negative pronouns

Negative pronouns are words used to indicate the absence or non-existence of people and objects. In Russian, there are two sets of negative pronouns formed from interrogative/relative pronouns by means of the prefixes ни (никто, ничто, никакой, ничей) and не (некого, нечего).

Pronoun никто, ничто, никакой, ничей

These pronouns decline just like interrogative/relative pronouns. When a preposition occurs, it is placed between the prefix and the pronoun, which takes the case required by the preposition.

Case Никто Ничто
Nom никто ничто
Gen никого (ни ... кого) ничего (ни ... чего)
Dat никому (ни .. кому) ничему (ни ... чему)
Acc никого (ни ... кого) ничего (ни ... чего)
Ins никем (ни ... кем) ничем (ни ... чем)
Prep ни ... ком ни ... чём

Pronoun некого, нечего

These pronouns decline just like interrogative/relative pronouns, but they do not occur in the nominative case forms to express negation. When a preposition occurs, it is placed between the prefix and the pronoun, which takes the case required by the preposition.

Case Некого Нечего
Nom -- --
Gen некого (не ... кого) нечего (не ... чего)
Dat некому (не .. кому) нечему (не ... чему)
Acc некого (не ... кого) нечего (не ... что)
Ins некем (не ... кем) нечем (не ... чем)
Prep не ... ком не ... чём
